Big, boring and slow. That's the formula for teenage drivers, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit that analyzes auto safety and driving issues.
"The vehicle choice for teens is especially crucial because of their higher risk of getting into a crash," said Russ Rader, the institute's spokesman.

Kelley names Top 10 green cars
“Green” is the new big thing in the auto industry, and Nissan's introduction later this year of the first mass-produced, highway-capable electric car sets the stage for more zero-tailpipe-emissions vehicles.
We're going to be seeing more of those, too, as we get closer to the 2016 deadline the Obama administration has set for the automakers to achieve CAFÉ (corporate average fuel economy) ratings of 34.1 mpg.
But the whole green concept includes more than just the pure electric vehicles such as the Nissan Leaf; it also encompasses products with great fuel economy such as gasoline-electric hybrids, the coming plug-in hybrids such as the 2011 Chevrolet Volt and even “clean” diesels such as those being sold by Germany's Volkswagen in the U.S. market.

Metrolink to unveil commuter train cars with crash-absorbing impact zones
Trying to shed a record of deadly accidents, Southern California's Metrolink system will take a leap forward on safety this week when it unveils the nation's first commuter train cars designed to better protect riders and crews with crash-absorbing, collapsible impact zones.
Akin to the crushable bumpers added to automobiles in the 1970s, the 117 high-tech cars, costing a total of $230 million, are the product of years of federal research and a fast-tracked development push by the region's rail service after a horrific accident five years ago in Glendale.

17 fantastic concept cars
During the last international auto show season, we saw a range of concept cars, some with wild, futuristic designs and some that look like they could roll out of a garage today. Three particular themes emerged amongst these design studies:
- Hybrid and electric power trains
- Small city cars
- Personal electronics integration
Automakers are also planning for growing urbanization with small cars that are easy to park and maneuver through congested city centers. Even GMC gets into the act of designing small, while Mini shows that it can get even smaller.
A number of concepts shown by automakers try new ways to interact with personal electronic devices. The Peugeot BB1 in particular strives for complete smartphone integration.

Metrolink Unveils Safer, Crash-Resistant Cars
CALTON,Calif (AP)-Southern California's Metrolink is showing off new crash-resistant train cars that will replace most of its older cars.
The cars, which feature "crush zone" technology to absorb impact in a crash, were unveiled Monday at Metrolink's maintenance facility in Colton.
The commuter rail service began considering using the technology after a 2005 crash in suburban Glendale that killed 11 people.
Another crash in 2008 in the San Fernando Valley killed 25 people and unleashed a second wave of concern about Metrolink safety.
Metrolink hopes to have 117 cars ready by next year.
The $229 million fleet is being built by Rotem, a division of Hyundai, in South Korea. -
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Tom Allen's General Motors dealership used to employ 49 people. Between the Detroit giant's bankruptcy and the termination notice he got last May for his Chevrolet and Cadillac lines, 26 employees have either been laid off or left.
But in March, GM reversed course and notified Allen that his Monroe, Mich., store was one of 666 dealerships chosen to live on. Now in the final stages of finalizing his franchise reinstatement, Allen is already lining up interviews to start hiring again.
The word "caught on like wildfire" through his local region when the reinstatement came through, Allen said: "They say bad news travels fast -- well, this good news travels very fast."

Your Next Car: Five Things to Think About
There's a lot to think about when buying your next car. The auto industry is at a critical turning point as it transitions to electric drive. It's like 1900, when the head scratcher in the marketplace had to choose between a gas, steam or electric car. The discriminating chose the EVs -- they were quieter, more reliable, and didn't have to be cranked -- but the rapid advance of internal combustion soon made them obsolete. As early as 1915, electric cars had become the domain of elderly women (like Henry Ford's wife).

Germany wants 1 million electric cars by 2020
BERLIN – German Chancellor Angela Merkel and top executives of the country's main carmakers and energy companies are meeting in Berlin to launch a new initiative to develop electric vehicles.
The so-called "national platform for electric mobility" being started Monday comes after Merkel pledged to have one million electric vehicles on the road within the next decade.
Merkel says there needs to be greater independence from natural resources. She is pushing sustainable technologies that will help limit the effects of climate change.
BMW AG's chief executive Norbert Reithofer says Germany is well positioned to become a technology leader in that market.
He says: "To make this happen, our leaders in politics and industry have to be pulling in the same direction." -
Boosting Batteries For Electric Cars
Researchers at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will probe working batteries with new tools.
Gasoline beat out electricity as the prime power source for cars in the early 1900s. The problem was the battery. Electric cars are trying to make a comeback in the early 2000s. The problem is the battery.
Sure, batteries have gotten a lot better. Electric cars are here--but they are very expensive, like the Tesla Roadster, and they have a limited driving range, like the coming Nissan ( NSANY - news - people ) Leaf, which aims to last 100 miles before recharge. If batteries' improvements are compared with, say, the improvement in transistors, it looks like batteries have gone nowhere, fast.

First drive: Mercedes-Benz C200 CGI and C250 CGI
A switch from supercharging to turbocharging brings more performance and lower fuel use for the better equipped new C200 CGI and C250 CGI.
Mercedes-Benz has improved the breed of its C-Class volume-seller with the addition of two new four-cylinder petrol models to its line-up.
Replacing the aged C200 Kompressor’s 1.8-litre supercharged four-cylinder is the C200 CGI and its higher-output C250 CGI sibling for a double-pronged attack.
Both are available in sedan and wagon body styles (the wagon costs $1890 more) and come under the company’s “BlueEfficiency” marketing label of reduced fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Priced from $57,900 (plus on-road and dealer costs), the C200 CGI sedan opens the range with an all-new direct-injection (hence the CGI acronym, which means charged gasoline injection) 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces 135kW and 250Nm.

Battery switching stations should make electric cars go and go
TOKYO: For all the feel-good rhetoric about electric cars, the inconvenient truth is that drivers remain sceptical of battery technology that can carry them only 160 kilometres at a time.
However, an entrepreneurial venture to introduce a network of battery switching stations, introduced on a trial basis in Tokyo yesterday and due for Australia next year, may allay those doubts for some.
The pilot program between the Silicon Valley company Better Place and Nihon Kotsu, Tokyo's largest taxi company, is the first test of the technology before it is introduced in Israel and Denmark next year.

Once released, it will battle a slightly face-lifted Mercedes-Benz S-class, expected to be unveiled next spring, and BMW's all-new 2009 7-series. But unlike the rather conservative 7-series, which backed away from the audacious styling of its predecessor, the next Audi A8 will show a new look and carry the brand forward stylistically.

BMW 7 Series Autoshow
BMW seems to be on a mission lately to offer something for everyone, no matter how nonsensical a certain consumer’s particular set of needs and wants may be. Case in point: the brilliant X6 and its mutant half-sister, the 5-series Gran Turismo. The latest in Bavaria’s barrage of the bizarre, the ActiveHybrid 7—a full-size “luxury performance” hybrid—seems to actually make sense relative to those two. It doesn’t hurt the argument for its existence that a competitor from Lexus—the LS600hL—has been on the road for two years now.
